Abidjan’s Pâtisserie Sococe, Now on Rue des Jardins in II Plateaux

Residents of Vallon and II Plateaux are –frankly– spoiled for choice when it comes to pastries.  There are several outstanding pastry shops in the neighborhood, including Des Gâteaux et du Pain.  So, naturally, the audience (including the Global Grazers team) is a bit jaded.  Nonetheless, when Pâtisserie Sococe opened an outlet on Rue des Jardins recently we just had to give it a try.

We were enthusiastic about tasting their pastries, because we (and others in the area) have always loved the crusty baguettes sold at the Sococe supermarket on Boulevard Latrille.  Their baguettes are so popular that purchasing one (or more) usually involves standing in a lengthy queue.  The reward is a warm, crusty baguette that crackles as you bite into it and melts in your mouth.

The pastries look so inviting. It’s unfortunate the flavor just wasn’t up to par.

On the day we visited Pâtisserie Sococe, we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff and selected an array of pastries, including chausson aux pommes, palmiers, pain raisin, and pain au chocolat.  We had high hopes as we arrived home with our treats.  Unfortunately, the pastries were lackluster.  They weren’t very flavorful and the pastry crust was leaden.  Moreover, the pain raisin (which is one of my personal favorites) only had about three raisins in it.

Our verdict:  Stick to the baguettes.  The pastries really aren’t worth it.
