Internationally, Didier Drogba is famed for his skills on the pitch. Every football fan is familiar with Drogba’s incredible talent and ability to turn a lost cause into a win on the turn of a dime, making the impossible seem easy.
Here, in Côte d’Ivoire, Drogba is a national hero. He is universally admired for his athletic achievements and has inspired generations of youngsters to pursue their football dreams. However, he is also renowned for his involvement in charitable projects –including the special olympics– which he actively supports. I was fortunate enough to meet up with Didier Drogba during the opening ceremony of this year’s Special Olympics in Côte d’Ivoire and can personally attest to his humility, sincerity and passion for using athletics as a tool to spur young people to follow their dreams and believe in themselves.
