This is one of many photos taken by local photographer F.W.H. Arkhurst in Grand Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire between 1900 and 1910. Could this proud Appollo woman have been amongst those who successfully protested against French colonization, ultimately securing the nation’s Independence?
I do not know the answer to that. However, I do plan to offer you a bit more information about these strong women and the rich matriarchal tradition from which they derived their courage, stamina and strength. Stay tuned…
